The Story Behind the Craft

How a family legacy from Crimea became a trusted name in boat upholstery across South Florida

Behind Boat Upholstery Broward stands a craftsman for whom working with leather and marine vinyl isn’t just a trade — it’s a family tradition that spans generations. His journey began over 30 years ago in Feodosiya, Crimea, where he grew up watching his mother and grandfather work tirelessly at sewing machines.

In this household, attention to detail and pride in craftsmanship were part of everyday life. The belief was simple: “If you’re going to make something — make it to last.”

Honing Precision in Military Service

Even during his military service, his sewing skills didn’t go unnoticed. Thanks to his reputation for precision, he was entrusted with repairs and custom stitching tasks for the unit. Those years not only sharpened his technical ability but also instilled discipline and confidence — qualities that still define his work today.

From the Black Sea to the Adriatic Coast

In the early 1990s, as Ukraine embraced independence and private enterprise began to bloom, he helped found one of the region’s first cooperatives — “Druzhba” (Friendship) — in Feodosiya. There, he led a team of leatherworkers while also working hands-on, crafting leather bags, belts, garments, and eventually seat covers.

That same period marked his first experience upholstering boats. With Crimea’s long coastline and vibrant boating culture, he began producing custom marine seating, learning to work with sun-resistant materials, vinyl, and UV-stable threads well before these became industry standards.

As his reputation grew, so did his opportunities. Through the late 1990s and 2000s, he worked in Montenegro and Croatia, eventually expanding into Serbia and Portugal. Across these regions, he partnered with boat owners, small marinas, and even yacht builders — producing and restoring marine interiors that had to withstand heat, salt, and the challenges of open water.

A New Chapter in South Florida

Following the pandemic, he relocated to the United States, where he founded Boat Upholstery Broward — bringing together decades of European craftsmanship with American reliability. Today, based in Fort Lauderdale, this family-run business, led by father and son, serves clients from Miami to Pompano Beach and Palm Beach.

They specialize in marine upholstery, custom seat covers, captain’s chairs, bolsters, sun pads, and full interior restorations — combining traditional techniques with modern marine-grade materials: premium vinyl, Sunbrella fabric, closed-cell foam, UV-resistant thread, stainless steel hardware, and more.
